Rac stands for Reservation against Cancellation. This means you do not have a seat confirmed however, you are able to get on the train with your ticket. You have a chance of getting a confirmed seat prior to the train leaving. If your ticket is located in an AC accommodation, you have the right to be seated with an additional rac passenger.

RAC = Reservation Against Cancellation. The reasoning behind RAC lies in the fact that Railways is the sole long distance method of transportation and communication for the large majority of the population.
